“This is incredible,” Richelle said, glancing out at the water. “I didn’t know you could cook so well until you made the osso buco, and now this.” She popped a cherry tomato into her mouth. The man had brought a picnic dinner—complete with Greek salad, souvlaki chicken, pita, hummus and tzatziki.

“Full disclosure,” he said, dipping a pita wedge into the hummus, “I didn’t make any of it. I didn’t have time. This is courtesy of Paige.”

Ah, well, at least he was honest. She couldn’t cook worth a damn, and the fact that he could was a huge turn-on. But the fact that he was honest with her about not having made the dinner was an even bigger turn-on. Honesty trumped everything else in a relationship, no question.

They’d driven for just over half an hour, heading north on the I-5 and into Lynnwood until they hit Picnic Point. From there, Liam took them down a dirt road to a secluded area on the water with their own private picnic spot overlooking the Puget Sound and Whidbey Island. It was one of the best first dates she’d ever been on. No putting on of airs, no need to pretend to be anybody but herself. Maybe it was because she already knew Liam, but a big part of her figured that had they not known each other for over three years or been sleeping together, the date still would have been just as relaxing. He just had that way about him.

Prying a piece of chicken off her skewer with her fork, she took a bite. “You think you’re getting lucky tonight, stud? Zara told me that I didn’t have to put out on the first date.” She bobbed her eyebrows at him playfully.

His grin turned almost boyish. “Honestly, I’d love nothing more than to fuck you right here on the hood of my car. But I’ll take my cues from you.”

She glanced back at his car, which was parked not too far away on the gravel. That did sound like a lot of fun.

The sun was setting, lending a warm orange glow to the sky. The air had cooled off a touch, making the breeze that swept across her bare arms cause goosebumps to prickle up.

“Here,” he said, watching as she shivered slightly. He grabbed his jacket—she’d forgotten to bring one, of course—and he draped it over her shoulders. “Better?”

She tightened it around herself and nodded. “Thank you.”

His smile made her entire body ache with a need to be with him. She wanted to be with Liam. Not just on Wednesday nights, not just as a casual thing. She wanted to be with Liam.

But first, she needed to show him that she trusted him, which wasn’t going to come easy. She had to take it in baby steps, otherwise, she’d spook herself and probably run to another state again. Take her kid, change her name and start over.

Trust would never come easy to her again. She knew that. But she also knew she had to stop painting men with the same brush.
